Services on the network

 •  Categories: General - distributed environments

Several posts ago, I suggested that on the network everything is a service.

I have said this at a couple of meetings recently, and registered some blank expressions. A part of this is that the specialised sense of service (an interface to functionality on the network) is not the first thing that many people hear in a more general conversation (they may hear a more general sense, as in a dry cleaning service, a reference service, the secret service). Or when they do register the specialized sense of service, they do not think of simple web access as a service.

But as service recombination becomes more important -- with user environments, with other resources -- we need to think more about what service interfaces we make available to facilitate stitching.
