Lorcan Dempsey's weblog On libraries, services and networks.

A family affair

 •  Categories: Libraries - organization and services , Social networking

In discussion with some Members' Council folks last year, Lynn Connaway mentioned that one of the interesting things to emerge from the Sense-making the information confluence project was that students often turned to their fathers for advice and guidance when they had an information need.

At the Taiga Forum, Susan Gibbons noted a similar phenomenon: students often turned to their parents for help. [ppt]This had prompted the library to think about sending materials about the library to parents. If they help, they should be prepared.

This is an interesting manifestation of how practices are co-evolving with changed network capacities. The cell-phone, IM, email, mean that the student remains close to a network of family and friends. They only move away in one sense.
